Parkinson’s device: Karnataka teen wins Bal Puraskar

A  remarkable 15-year-old girl from Ullal, Mogaveera town in Dakshina Kannada, has garnered national attention with her innovative work in developing self-stabilising devices for Parkinson’s patients and affordable prosthetics.


Sindoora Raja has been awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar for her exceptional achievements in innovation, becoming one of 17 children to receive the Prime Minister’s National Award from President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on Thursday.


"Science has always been my passion," said Sindhoora, her voice filled with determination. "I want to use technology to make lives better."


Sindhoora's journey has not been without its difficulties. "Being from a small town, accessing resources and mentorship was a challenge. However, my family’s unwavering support and my thirst for knowledge propelled me forward," she explained. Among her achievements, she has mentored students at the Junior World Science Scholars (JWSS) Programme in New York and has been selected to represent India at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in 2025.


Her AI model, designed while she was in class 10, calculates brain age and predicts the likelihood of neurodegenerative diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's. Sindhoora is passionate about fields such as robotics, mathematics, quantum mechanics, and computing. She is committed to positioning Karnataka at the forefront of innovation. 


Her mother, Shibani, expressed immense pride, stating, "Sindhoora’s dedication is inspiring. Recognitions like these encourage the younger generation to dream big and innovate."


Sindhoora's academic endeavours reflect her commitment to learning, as she has transitioned from Bharathi English Medium School in Ullal to National Public School, Indiranagar in Bengaluru. -Salar News
